ALLENTOWN, Pa. – Nowhere Coffee Co. has announced that its new roastery and coffee shop is opening somewhere in downtown Allentown.
The business, which opened its original location in February 2022 at 3127 Tilghman St. in South Whitehall Township, is planning to open its new roastery and coffee shop location on Memorial Day weekend at 17 S. Ninth St. in downtown Allentown, according to a post on Nowhere Coffee Co.’s social media pages.
For decades, the downtown Allentown space has been home to Garden Gate Natural Foods, a business offering organic groceries, vitamins and supplements, personal care products and more, which was recently sold, according to Garden Gate owner Richard Samar.
Garden Gate’s last day of business on South Ninth Street will be April 30, but the business will continue under different ownership elsewhere, said Samar, who is retiring.
News of Nowhere Coffee Co.’s forthcoming location in downtown Allentown is a positive development for the coffee shop business, which has had a tumultuous past few months.
On Jan. 12, the business’ former Emmaus coffee shop location was one of several local businesses that President Biden visited while in the Lehigh Valley.
A few weeks later, Nowhere Coffee Co. was denied permits for a planned coffee roastery on Trexlertown Road in Upper Macungie Township, leading owners Juan and Lauren Vargas to shift gears and seek a new location for their roastery.
Then in mid-March, the Vargases announced that they had to close the business’ 1.5-year-old location on Main Street in Emmaus because of a dispute with their landlord over water damage from a roof leak.
“An eclipse offers us a rare opportunity to shed negative energies,” Nowhere Coffee Co.’s announcement on Monday reads.
“It is time to take a step forward and leave the past in the past. In the midst of our chaos, two individuals appeared and reminded us of the good in people at a time when we really needed the reminder. To Richie and Sally: Juan and I promise to treat 17 S 9th Street with the respect it deserves. We are forever grateful to you.”

Nowhere Coffee Co. continues to operate its original South Whitehall location, offering specialty coffee drinks such as cortado, cappuccino, macchiato, cafe au lait and cold brew, along with other beverages such as micro-brewed tea, hot chocolate, smoothies and fruitshakes.
Food offerings, including bagels, egg dishes, oatmeal and pastries such as croissants, brownie bites, “bruffins” and lemon bars, are also available.
“Onward and upward, we go,” the online announcement continues.
