It may not be surprising to those who live here, but café au lait is the favored drink of Bayou State coffee aficionados. Plus, we’re the only state to claim it as the top choice.
So said Coffeeness in its recent analysis of the caffeinated data from Google.
Café au lait, the French-inspired hot cup of joe with steamed milk, usually found with a side order of beignets, is thought to have traveled from the Old World with the great influx of French settlers to the area. Historical data points to a woman named Rose Nicaud, a former slave, who opened the first French Market coffee stand.
The heady brew has become synonymous with the market and the city as well.
Elsewhere in the country, espresso, which traces its heritage to Italy, is the favored coffee variation, being the top choice in 28 states. Next comes latté, a sort of au lait with an Italian accent, which was tops in 14 states.
Cappuccino, the “dressy” version of latté, was tops in 11 states. Among our neighbors, Texas and Mississippi like cappuccino, while Arkansas is partial to espresso.
Alabama is torn between cappuccino and latté, while Georgia stands alone with black coffee.
Globally, cappuccino takes the lead in 24 countries, with espresso coming second with 14 countries, including the U.S. and Canada.
